Privacy Policy

What is active on this site: Google Analytics 4, Microsoft Clarity, Cloudflare (hosting and Cloudflare Web Analytics), and the Kit newsletter form in the footer. Each is described below, with the cookies it sets and how to opt out.

The short version

This is a static website. There are no user accounts and no comments. We never ask for your email to download anything: every template, workbook and dataset here is a plain download with no gate. We do run three analytics tools and one newsletter form, all named below. The reserve calculator runs entirely in your browser: none of the numbers you type into it are transmitted to us or to anyone else, and the section on our custom events sets out exactly what does get sent when you press Calculate.

What we collect today

  • Directly from you: your email address, but only if you submit the newsletter form in the site footer. That form is a live embed operated by Kit (formerly ConvertKit) and posts to app.kit.com; the email address goes to Kit, under Kit’s own privacy policy, and is used to send the newsletter you asked for. It is not required for anything else on this site. Kit also stores values in your browser’s local storage (ckid, cksubscribed-…, loglevel).
  • The contact page has no form. Contact is by email only; see the contact page.
  • Analytics: page views and a small set of named events, described in the next section.
  • Server logs: this site is served by Cloudflare, which may log standard request data (IP address, user agent, pages requested) for security and operations, under Cloudflare’s own privacy policy.

Analytics: the exact tools running on this page

Three analytics tools load on every page of this site, including this one. You can confirm all of it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools on this page and look at the Network and Application tabs. We would rather you check than take our word for it.

  • Google Analytics 4, measurement ID G-JJSDQGTCMZ. Records page views and the custom events listed below. Sets the cookies _ga and _ga_JJSDQGTCMZ.
  • Microsoft Clarity, project ID xi64aiqtip. Records how pages are used (mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and how the page rendered), which Microsoft makes available to us as heatmaps and session replays. Sets the cookies _clck and _clsk.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics (static.cloudflareinsights.com), injected by our host to measure page performance.

What Clarity does and does not record

Clarity is the most intrusive-sounding tool on this list, so here is what Microsoft’s own documentation says, rather than our paraphrase of it. Content typed into input boxes is masked in all masking modes and cannot be unmasked, and masked content is not uploaded to Clarity. Clarity data is retained for our access for up to 30 days from recording and is stored in Microsoft Azure. Microsoft, not us, controls that data. The custom events we send, and everything in them

Beyond page views, our own code sends a short list of named events to Google Analytics 4. Every field any of them can carry is listed here; there are no others.

  • When you click a download, an outbound link, or a marked link: the event name (for example spreadsheet_download, template_download, starter_pack_download, dataset_download, outbound_click, outbound_vendor_click, source_click), the path of the page you were on, the first 100 characters of the link’s own text, and, where the markup carries them, the file name, the vendor or source name, the link URL and the link’s domain.
  • When you finish a tool: calculator_complete, assessment_complete or tool_complete, carrying only a tool identifier (such as reserve_contribution_v1) and the page path. No value you entered is included.
  • When you export a reserve snapshot: snapshot_export, carrying the tool identifier, the page path, and whether you chose print or file download. The snapshot itself is generated in your browser and is not sent to us.
  • When a newsletter signup succeeds: newsletter_signup, carrying the page path, the Kit form ID and a stage label. Your email address is not included in this event. It goes to Kit through the form itself.

IP addresses

Almost all of our readers are in the United States, so the rule that applies to most of you is the non-EU one, and it is not the same as the EU rule. We are stating both, because writing “Google Analytics does not store IP addresses” and citing the EU page would be an overclaim, and this site holds vendors to that standard.

  • For readers outside the EU, Switzerland and the UK, which is most of ours, Google says IP addresses are collected and used, for spam detection and to derive coarse location (city, region, country). Google states that it “never associates raw IP addresses with user identifiers and discards raw IP addresses after use” (Google Analytics Help, non-EU IP usage, read September 6, 2026).
  • For readers in the EU, Switzerland or the UK, Google says it does not log or store individual IP addresses, and drops them after deriving coarse location (Google Analytics Help, EU/UK data and privacy, read September 6, 2026).

Separately, Clarity uses IP-based geolocation to determine visitor location, and Cloudflare, as our host, sees your IP address the way any web server does. We never see, store or have any use for your IP address ourselves.

How to opt out

  • Block or clear cookies for commonkeel.com in your browser settings. The four cookies named above are the only ones this site sets.
  • Use Google’s Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • Use a tracker-blocking extension or a browser that blocks these scripts by default. Nothing on this site (no page, no template, no calculator) requires analytics to work, and we do not detect or nag about blockers.

We do not sell personal data, we do not run advertising, and we have no interest in identifying individual visitors. We use these tools to see which pages and templates actually help boards.

Downloads

Template files, workbooks, the starter pack and the pricing dataset are plain file downloads with no email gate. We count them in aggregate through the download events described above; the files themselves contain no tracking of any kind.

Outbound links

Links to vendor and government sites take you to services with their own privacy practices. If we ever join affiliate programs, outbound links may include referral parameters; that will be disclosed per our disclosure policy.

Email

The newsletter signup form in the site footer is live. It is operated by Kit (formerly ConvertKit), our named email service provider, and it asks for one thing: an email address. Signup is optional, single-purpose (the newsletter you asked for, and nothing else), and every message carries a working unsubscribe link. We do not sell, rent or share the list.

Children

This site is for adults serving on association boards and is not directed at children under 13.
